The International Association of Arson Investigators of Ontario are providing a NFPA 921 training program. 

For those wanting to write their Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator Certification Exam (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI); on May 9th, 2025, examinations will be available for applicants who have pre-registered with NAFI.

The NFPA 921 training program will focus on proper investigation techniques as outlined in the NFPA 921 Guide.  Students will participate in classroom instruction followed by scene reviews of fire-damaged property. Please review the program objectives and topics below. With your passing grade, you will be recognized as a certified fire and explosion investigator and entitled you to use the CFEI professional designation.

The National Certification Program Objectives:

  • Recognize Qualified Fire and Explosion Investigators.
  • Serve as a National Certification Registry and Clearinghouse for identifying qualified fire and explosion investigators.
  • Provide an established system to compare the various qualifications of those engaged in fire and explosion investigation.
  • Promote excellence in the Training, Education, and Conduct of fire and explosion investigators.
  • Provide a system by which equally qualified investigators specializing in the various disciplines of fire and explosion investigation will have immediate acceptance as “Experts”.
  • Provides Educational Hour requirements for Certification.

  • Dynamics of Fire Investigation
  • Chemistry and Physics of Fire Behavior
  • Science of Fire Dynamics
  • Basic and Advanced Fire Pattern Analysis
  • Fire/Explosion Scene Investigation Techniques
  • Diagramming of the Fire and Explosion Scene
  • Collection and Preservation of Evidence
  • Origin Determination
  • Evaluation of Fire Causes – Failure Analysis
  • Determination of Electrical Fire Causes
  • Explosion Dynamics and Scene Investigation
  • Effective Fire Case Testimony

Advanced Fire Investigation Training Program

This portion of the program will feature guest lecturers working in the private and public sectors. The presenters will provide students with information covering topics such as investigation of death caused by fire, post-fire vehicle identification, trends in fire loss litigation, drug labs, and other relevant topics for those investigating fire losses.

This program will provide 32 hours of ongoing professional education and training hours toward maintaining your existing CFEI designation.

Advanced Fire Investigation Training Program Fee & Registration:

The program fee includes the 4-day program, a copy of the NFPA 921 manual ($210 value), lunches, and IAAI swag.

CFEI EXAMINATION FEE & REGISTRATION

The exam fee is paid directly to NAFI and is non-refundable.

On May 9th, 2025, examinations will be available for the eligible applicants who have pre-registered with NAFI. With your passing grade, you will be recognized as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator and will be entitled to use the CFEI professional designation.

To write the CFEI examination, you must become a member of NAFI and apply for the CFEI examination. IAAI Ontario must receive all documents and payments before Thursday, March 27, 2025, in order for you to qualify to write the CFEI examination. In turn, we will direct your documentation to NAFI. 

CFEI Examination Procedure: 

1. You must be a NAFI member to apply for the CFEI certification. Please go online to https://www.nafi.org/join/ and apply for membership. Your NAFI membership should be approved in 24 hours, and NAFI will email you your NAFI membership number. You will need to write your membership number on the CFEI application. 

2. Visit www.nafi.org and complete the following steps:

a. Select “Forms” at the top of the page 

b. Select “CFEI Guidelines and Application” 

c. Review application process 

d. Verify you qualify to write the examination 

e. Complete the application, ensuring it is complete and accurate. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

fPay attention to the minimum and maximum credits allowed/required in each section. 

g. Only applicants with credits above 120 will be allowed to sit for the exam. 120-149 credits may be granted a provisional CFEI. Credits about 150 may be granted the full CFEI. 

h. Once complete, print and sign the completed CFEI package. 

3. Complete the Credit card authorization page and NAFI will charge you the USD $125.00 (non-refundable CFEI application fee) and attach to the CFEI package prepared in Step 2. 

4. Submit your completed hard copy CFEI Package and NAFI payment to:

IAAI Ontario will:

  • Forward all completed membership applications, CFEI applications and fees to the NAFI National Certification Board on your behalf.
  • Receive an examination for each successful applicant.
  • Proctor the CFEI examination.
